Queen Mary – Owner’s and Foundation On-Board Tasks

OVERARCHING 180-DAY GOAL:

To undertake within 180 days a comprehensive review together with timetables, budgets, means and methods, and to implement any and all that are (collectively) agreed upon and “do-able” within this time period. The specifics include these:

  • To diligently work toward those tasks necessary for the Queen Mary to become “The Brightest Star in the Maritime Galaxy”…….. ‘As iconic as the Eiffel Tower; as respected as Stanford; as fun as a Barnum & Bailey Circus.’
  • To seize (and/or improve) opportunities that fit comfortably within the Queen’s present operations.
  • To vastly improve the Queen’s image in the “Maritime Museum Galaxy” starting with cooperative agreements with Google’s Cultural Heritage, their work in Paris and London, and Google’s Cultural Exhibitions. Learn more here
  • To put forward and hold “world class” conferences featuring those deeply involved in maters of global concern. In particular to concentrate on those individuals with global recognition doing superb work to preserve and protect the Ocean. (See Sylvia Earle Bio)
  • To comprehensively detail that which is necessary for the Queen to deliver, the streaming/on line technology which would make good the promise of World Class Conferences; World Class Auctions; World Class Award Stage; World Class Maritime Museum”.  Model: Stanford .
  • To involve the Aspen Institute with the idea to hold conferences on behalf of their 2,500 Society of Aspen Fellows – and to set in motion something similar: “A Society of “Friends and Fellows of the Queen.
  • To define and, if possible, implement, outreach to school age youths (along the lines of Stanford/Tennis operations) – but in this case to involve the yacht/sailing community. (The Sir Peter Blake/ “Red Socks” Element.) Learn more here
  • To define and if possible implement an “Auction Plan “based on a viable “partnership” with a major auction House (such as Sotheby’s or Christies).
  • To define and if possible to implement arrangements with Massive Open On-line Courses (MOOC’s), by far the most sparkling example of how education is undergoing radical change. Learn more here
  • To begin the implementation of the Luminary Room Campaign, “setting the stage” to “light up the Queen as an exciting, intellectual Gathering Point” — (Model: The Davos Economic Forum) Learn more here
  • To undertake the study – and if possible – recruiting volunteer, principally from students in education community. (But also to include seniors and others from the yachting community.)

Silicon Valley – Silicon Beach

The four days l spent last week at Stanford and the heavy dose of extraordinary wealth on high display from San Jose to San Francisco causes me to believe deeply in the ‘thought-connection’ between Silicon Valley and Silicon Beach.

The hard fact is there is substantial merit to tying charitable activities on the RMS Queen Mary with the larger vision of Silicon Beach. Doing so would widen its appeal (especially to help disadvantaged youngsters) and narrow resistance to “gifting for a ‘floating, for-profit hotel’. Big upsides for everyone.

Queen Mary -Unlimited Intellectual Firepower

One of the great symbols of American military firepower are her aircraft carriers and the fleet that directly supports each of the ten Carriers now in service. One of the great Maritime Museums in the world is the San Diego Maritime Museum, 70 miles south of Long Beach (where the Queen Mary has been permanently berthed since 1969).

Oddly, both have a great deal in common. (And a great deal that separates them as well.   Read the rest of this entry

Real Life Lesson about Mind Sets

As a young man, in 1968, the trading company I worked for  “parachuted” me into Seoul, Korea. With over 100 years of trading experience and offices all over the Far East, it was time, they said, to “open up” in Seoul.   The instructions were simple – ‘John, you have about six months to pay for yourself and those you hire; do what you wish, but pick your opportunities very carefully.”

Queen Mary History

The RMS Queen Mary celebrated her eightieth birthday late in 2014. She’s a remarkable vessel with over 1,000 Atlantic Crossings with passengers that included Kings and Queens, Prime Ministers and Presidents, tycoons, engineers, scientists, attorneys, artists, dreamers and schemers — and the dreadfully poor (loaded with hope for a better life in America).

The Queen weights in at 82,000 tons and is bigger than the Titanic. In 1969 she was “decommissioned” and sold to the City of Long Beach.  To learn more about the Queen, please visit her website

Isaacson on Collaboration

Walter Isaacson has a great deal to say about the genius of collaboration. Brilliantly expressed in his brand new book, The Innovators.

As Founder of the Aspen Institute and its Society of Fellows and Aspen Idea Festival, Walt looms large in our target sights.  More later.

Thought Leaders – Cerf, Sir John, Isaacson

A confluence of events and opportunities has caused me to return to recordings made during Global Learn Day Voyage Ten, October 2004 – to include this one with Sir John Daniel, Vint Cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist, Google, Blaine Berger and Hibbs.

Click the link below (audio recording only)

Audio recording Berger, Cerf, Daniels

Let us now fast-forward to a video of Vint Cerf, (Google Evangelist) Walter Isaacson and Dr Bob Kahn.

Then let us ask ourselves the this question:

Where is there — is there? – a “Headquarters” where these kinds of thought leaders can comfortably, affordably gather? Where both the ordinary folks and the extraordinary are likely to be?

Where the ideas and arguments advanced by Walter Isaacson in his brand new book The Innovators  could be put on high display? A  very compelling showcase – and stage  –  proving that physical collaboration is the single most powerful ingredient to speed up innovation, invention, disruption.

I believe there is such a place. Ready and waiting for Sir John, Vint and Walt to come there and tell us more on how they could help spearhead this Next Big Thing.

Ostriches, Illusions and Self Deception

The bad news just keeps on coming. This week it was a front page article in the Sunday New York Times (circulation 2.1 million): A heart-wrenching, in-depth piece about a rape inside the Kappa Sigma Fraternity House at the Hobart and Smith College, Vernon, New York. Read it and weep.
{NOTE: It gets worse with the Vernon Police report issued in response to the NY Times article. Click here } Add to this many dozens more of the same ilk — {Google search terms: Fraternity. rapes. expulsions. alcohol} Read the rest of this entry
